Pharmacological Management of Persistent Pain in Older Persons [2] Description: This article discusses the multi-factorial manifestations of chronic pain in older people, and their consequences, such as anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, decreased socialization, and others. Classifications are also described for persistent pain, which include noiceptive, neuropathic, mixed, and unspecified pain. The article also describes clinical guidelines for managing chronic pain in older patients, such as assessment of chronic pain, pharmacologic treatment, management of side effects, nonpharmacologic strategies, recommendations for health systems caring for older patients, and other topics.
